Long-stitch-link-stitch workshop with Bari Zaki
Long-stitch-link-stitch binding (tied off with a ribbon!)
Saturday, April 4th - POSTPONED
from 11 am to 3 pm
What you’ll make: A beautiful (and practical!) ephemera album, travel journal, or sketchbook with soft covers in your choice of a dozen subtle shades of heavy Saint-Armand 100% cotton printmaking paper.
We begin, as always in our bookbinding classes, by getting acquainted with paper grain and its importance for the finished book. After an overview of the bookbinding tools you will use, you will fold three full-size sheets of drawing paper (with deckled edges) into nine-page signatures to create a nice thickness. You will make your cover from a luscious sheet of handmade paper.
You can configure your stitching to create one of several different delightful patterns.
Finally, we will reinforce our covers with thick watercolor paper for added sturdiness. And create a pocket/envelope for the interiors of your front and back covers. Your book will still open completely flat. We rejoice.
Class fee includes all materials we use to make a book: European mold-made paper, Saint-Armand printmaking paper, bone folder, shipping clerk’s knife, Xacto-blade, lightweight awl, waxed-linen thread, needle, ribbons, espresso, happiness.
Class availability is limited to 6 students per session. Studio Carta will offer a 10% discount storewide to students attending the workshop.
About the instructor:
Bari Zaki teaches several dozen workshops every year at her studio/shop/salon in Chicago. Her greatest delight is the expressions of accomplishment that her bookbinding and box making students voice at the end of class—followed in many instances by photos and emails reporting on further creations. Bari has guest taught at Studio Carta since 2018 and continues to be impressed by the number of students Angela fits comfortably (and beautifully) in her studio.
