Coptic-stitch binding workshop with Bari Zaki
Coptic-stitch binding with Reinforced Soft-Covers (tied off with a ribbon!)
Sunday, April 5th - POSTPONED
from 11 am to 3 pm
The covers of this style are sturdy, and the book opens delightfully flat. The difference between this version and the hard-cover version is that the attaching of the covers is easier. So, you can enjoy the stitch without the slight stress. We reinforce our covers after stitching with an additional piece of watercolor paper. The soft-cover version is a wonderful style to make at home, because you don’t need to cut book-board or mess with glue.
We begin, as always in our bookbinding classes, by getting acquainted with paper grain and its importance for the finished book. After an overview of the bookbinding tools you will use, you will fold ten full-size sheets of drawing paper (with deckled edges) into signatures to create a nice thickness. Next, you will make a “paper sandwich” for your cover, using: a sheet of luscious Japanese paper, an adhesive backing sheet, and a sheet of drawing paper. Then, you will measure, fold, and score your cover … and stitch your cover and pages together. Happiness ensues!
By the end of this class, you will have one completed book, and the confidence to make more at home, thanks to our charming illustrated handout with step-by-step instructions.
Class fee includes all materials we use to make a book: a sheet of luscious Japanese paper, European mold-made paper, bone folder, shipping clerk’s knife, Xacto blade, lightweight awl, waxed linen thread, needle, ribbons, espresso, happiness.
Class availability is limited to 6 students per session. Studio Carta will offer a 10% discount storewide to students attending the workshop.
About the instructor:
Bari Zaki teaches several dozen workshops every year at her studio/shop/salon in Chicago. Her greatest delight is the expressions of accomplishment that her bookbinding and box making students voice at the end of class—followed in many instances by photos and emails reporting on further creations. Bari has guest taught at Studio Carta since 2018 and continues to be impressed by the number of students Angela fits comfortably (and beautifully) in her studio.
